Satellite imagery to track naxals in India

With the naxal menace witnessing a growing trend in India, the CRPF plans to resort to technological advancement to curtail the growing menace. Plans are afoot by the ISRO to develop a satellite mapping system for the CRPF in order to keep a tab on the naxal movement. An integrated GIS sytems will be implemented in all the areas to pinpoint naxal hideouts via the use of satellite images.

With the Red corridor cutting through nine states, the CRPF has a huge task of tackling naxal menace, however, with modern technology like GIS, the Naxals may soon lose their edge.

Naxals, who have a stronghold in Bihar and West Bengal and also cut through the forest terrains of Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Orissa, usually have an element of surprise when they attack, however, the CRPF is planning to dilute the advantage that Naxals enjoy in their hideouts by implementing GIS technology, which will enable the CRPF to track and monitor the movements of Naxals in hostile terrain.

Commenting on the GIS system, Sis Ahmed, DG, CRPF said:"The ISRO is going to develop an integrated GIS system, which will help us counter insurgency operations and will enhance our operational skills and capabilities to a large extent."
