South Korea Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy said the country is ready to take a bite into the growing solar energy market with its steady technological gains and improvements in manufacturing.

This is according to Korea.net report, which cited the ministry as saying that the country has had all the necessary technology to produce quality solar electricity since 2006.

The art of map making must have started as instructions for travelers and sailors for routes and places. First known geographical treatise is that of Anaximander a Greek philosopher (610-546 BC), who considered sky as a complete sphere rotating about the polar star. He also visualized that earth’s surface must be curved, to account for a position of stars as one traveled. He considered earth as a cylinder about its east wet axis and height about one third its diameter. Pythagoras (582-479 BC) and his followers developed the notion of spherical earth. Hecataecus, Skylax, Ktesia, Nearchus, Magasthenes, Eratasthenes, Eudoxus, Hippalus, Strabo, anonymous writer of Periplus and Pliny the Elder were a few geographers, who preceded Ptolemy and described the South Asia. Claudius Ptolemy writing around 150 AD had access to most of writings of his above predecessors and he was able to produce the first map of the world known in his time. Planet Ark : Lowly Streams Play Big Role In Fighting Pollution: "CHICAGO - A meandering stream appears to play a powerful role in filtering out pollutants like nitrogen, and understanding this role could help prevent oxygen-depleting blooms of algae that threaten fish and shellfish downstream, researchers said on Wednesday.


The research was part of a project to determine whether rivers actively process pollutants and remove them from the ecosystem, or simply act as drain pipes that flush polluted waters into lakes or out to sea.

'They are most definitely processors,' said Stephen Hamilton, an aquatic ecologist at Michigan State University in Lansing, who led one of several teams studying the problem.

The study, which appears in the journal Nature, looked at how 72 streams across eight regions in the United States and Puerto Rico neutralize nitrogen.

'There is a remarkable amount of processing that takes place,' Hamilton said in a telephone interview. 'We were able to see how streams vary in that nitrogen processing.'

If overloaded, however, they found the streams were less efficient at removing the nitrogen that enters the stream through agricultural runoff, acid rain and human waste.

Too much nitrogen in the water can cause excessive growth of algae and aquatic plants in lakes and coastal marine waters, which deplete oxygen stores, k"

"Climate Change: As environmental alarmists entertain themselves by turning off lights, their efforts sometimes lead to unintended consequences. A new study, for example, shows they may be warming the earth by saving trees.

The latest effort to save the earth, something called Earth Hour, asked people around the world to turn off their lights for an hour to reduce carbon emissions and draw attention to climate change.

An initiative of the World Wildlife Fund, this rolling blackout began in New Zealand at 8 p.m. Saturday and moved west as other time zones reached that hour.

Effects of Pyroclastic Flows

Pyroclastic flows are high-density mixtures of hot, dry rock fragments and hot gases that move away from the vent that erupted them at high speeds. They may result from the explosive eruption of molten or solid rock fragments, or both. They may also result from the nonexplosive eruption of lava when parts of dome or a thick lava flow collapses down a steep slope. Most pyroclastic flows consist of two parts: a basal flow of coarse fragments that moves along the ground, and a turbulent cloud of ash that rises above the basal flow. Ash may fall from this cloud over a wide area downwind from the pyroclastic flow.
A pyroclastic flow will destroy nearly everything in its path. With rock fragments ranging in size from ash to boulders traveling across the ground at speeds typically greater than 80 km per hour, pyroclastic flows knock down, shatter, bury or carry away nearly all objects and structures in their way. The extreme temperatures of rocks and gas inside pyroclastic flows, generally between 200°C and 700°C, can cause combustible material to burn, especially petroleum products, wood, vegetation, and houses..

The forests on Mumbai�s outskirts will be the first in India to be electronically scanned for poachers and encroachers, as well as to trace the route guards take through the woods.

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) will install the Geographical Information System (GIS)-based software surveillance network, GeoVun, in the Borivali forests.

TCS, along with Conservation Action Trust (CAT) and WTI Advanced Technology Limited, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Maharashtra.

According to the agreement, which is still to be made public, GeoVun allows the users to identify best routes for patrolling, perform spatial analysis and produce reports. It integrates all maps and tables, an"
